Give Miracles

UX and design for a new campaign app focused around small event donations for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals

IN 2016, APPLE OPENED APPLE PAY to charities for fast, easy donations. Apple included Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals in the inaugural group of charities for Apple’s press announcement on Giving Tuesday. We worked with CMNH to create Give Miracles, a social charitable donations app. Users can create small, personal campaigns to support their local Children’s Hospital, then invite friends and solicit donations directly through the app and Apple’s Messages app.

The major challenge was releasing a full-featured experience into a Messages App Store that was itself quite young. In researching other apps for UI guidance, we found most to be driven by personal communication—sticker apps, reaction GIFs, and the like. Only a few brands were using the full power of Messages interactions, so we worked closely with Apple’s internal Messages team to verify our assumptions and make sure sure that our proposed solutions were feasible. With just a two-month timeline to delivery, keeping the three groups in close contact proved to be critical. Wireframes and high-fidelity mocks were created in Sketch, with a central InVision prototype to guide teams through review.

Despite first being a fully responsive web experience, Give Miracles was underutilized. We knew an app that could handle donations, organization, and a user’s contact list—without asking a user to copy and paste data between apps—would simplify our pain points. And with Apple opening Apple Pay, we knew we had a great shot at making user events more successful.

Historical campaign data led us to feature holiday-specific imagery more heavily for the first release—both as an idea guide for users new to Give Miracles, and a reliable, familiar set of images for campaign veterans.

OUR TEAM STRUCTURED the data to take advantage of sharing extensions in iOS for a fast, familiar experience. And with the companion Messages app, a user can share campaigns and donation or gift requests directly through Messages. Users on iOS devices can donate directly via Apple Pay in Messages, and users outside the Apple ecosystem are taken directly to the campaign’s donations web page.

To coincide with the release of the app, CMNH created a marketing campaign called “Make Thanksgiving Awkward #askformoney.” and immediately began work on a native Android app. Both apps are still in use.
